Derek Khan passed away last week in Dubai from Covid 19. I, like many, were shocked to hear the news.
Derek was a celebrity stylist, fashionista and ex-con started from humble beginning in Trinidad, climbed to the top of the fashion world as a celebrity stylist and TV presenter . . . and then wound up in federal prison for a ponzi scheme pawning high priced diamonds. Derek’s story of rags, to riches, to prison . . . with some valuable life lessons along the way of valuing the human being in front of you, no matter their position in life.
There are many things that we will remember about Derek, his stories, his magnetism, his wild creativity . . . but the thing I will remember most is his humility, how he genuinely cared about my family, and how he treated me and an equal (even though I’m not a celebrity with glitz glam or massive following). His humility. His kindness.
Here are the two parts of my in depth interview with him from 2019. I am so grateful we seized this opportunity together and I have something to remember him by. I pray that this serve as a tribute to Derek, and reminder and comfort to you as you mourn his passing, and remember and celebrate his life.
