Dr Seuss is getting “canceled”.
Okay that is a little bit of a mis-portrayal. Six of his 60+ titles are no longer being printed or allowed to be licensed by the publisher. So he isn’t fully being canceled. But there is a greater narrative at play worth examining.
First there is a list of 45 reasons Seuss should be canceled. In fact this list has been around a while and first published in the “Naked Communist” by Cleon Skousen, in March 1961 and was presented to US Congress in 1963 when a list of Current Communist Goals was presented to the US congress.
What is this list? Oh, nothing but a simple strategy to destroy family values, capitalism, democracy, and freedom as we know it . . . and sadly Dr. Seuss was just next in line for his day of reckoning.
I understand this is a highly contested issue as it touches on racism, anti racism, left v right, and the rabid cancel culture.
Some of you will think I conceded too many points to the left, and other I’m sure will think I’ve missed the tree for the forest (or the forest for the tree).
But one thing I know for certain . . . well . . . you’ll have to listen to the episode to find out what that is.
